Inside Look: Cirque du Soleil Comes to Riviera Maya

Updated: Nov 28, 2018

For decades, Cirque du Soleil has been captivating audiences by blending street entertainment with circus arts for a unique & stunning display. Now, the company is bringing its dramatic experiences to Mexico & Latin America. However, these plans entail something totally different – a new level of theater that combines cultural & culinary entertainment. Not only will this be the brand's first show outside of the U.S., but its also the first Cirque du Soleil spectacle of its kind. Attendees will be treated to a multi-sensory experience that features not only the spectacle they expect to see at these theatrical performances, but also an interesting palate-driven adventure that excites their taste-buds.

If you've been considering a trip to Riviera Maya, this news might be just the push you needed to take the plunge on a luxury vacation. Here's what you need to know about the new show:

A promising partnership Cirque du Soleil teamed up with Grupo Vidanta, a leading tourism developer, to create the show, which will be housed in a custom-designed theater that is currently under construction.

"This entirely new category of entertainment will be an experience one must see, hear & taste. We are extremely proud to bring this dream to life," said Grupo Vidanta founder Daniel Chavez Moran.

Daniel Lamarre, president & CEO of Cirque du Soleil, was adamant that the 600-seat Vidanta Theater, which is slated to be completed in May, will be unlike any other Cirque du Soleil space in the world. This is because the chief architect designed the theater with intimacy in mind so that audiences feel closer than ever to the performers.

According to the Los Angeles times, renderings of the majestic theater demonstrate that the building will contain a set of wing-like structures on either side, as well as an enormous natural pool surrounding it. The news source noted that the design is meant to mimic the natural beauty of the Yucatan jungle.

An elegant experience While you could certainly see a Cirque du Soleil show in Orlando or Las Vegas, the Riviera Maya dinner-and-a-show version offers something special. As you marvel at the breathtaking visuals & unbelievable acrobatics, you'll savor world-class cuisine & champagne service.

Conveniently, the Vidanta Theater is also located right between the Cancun International Airport & Playa del Carmen in the heart of the resort region, meaning you can easily get to the show from any of the area's top hotels.

There is no indication yet of the theme or ticket prices for the performances, which are scheduled to premiere in November 2014. However, if you want to plan a family vacation around the show, you can keep tabs on any new developments via the website
