Why You Need a Vacation, and How to Make the Most of One

Regardless of the industry you work in, your relationship status or family life, there are times when you just need to get away. Some people underestimate the importance of a luxury vacation, but a trip to an exotic destination isn't just fun, it's also crucial for your well-being.

While it can be challenging to find the time to plan a trip, let alone take one, doing so could boost your outlook & even your work performance. Still not convinced? Here's why you may need to book a flight, & how to make the most of your getaway:

The perks According to a recent study by the Society for Human Resource Management, taking a vacation can have a major positive impact on a person's job. In fact, a whopping 90 to 94 percent of HR professionals surveyed admitted that some of the advantages include increased productivity & morale, as well as improved wellness. Furthermore, more than two-thirds of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that workers who took advantage of their vacation days would experience higher job satisfaction & also be more engaged in the workplace.

CareerCast likened a vacation to pressing a reset button. After relaxing & rejuvenating your mind, you can face your work energized, with a newly sharpened focus & drive. So how do you take a trip without constantly worrying about job-related matters?

The preparation In an increasingly connected society, it can be challenging to unplug from it all & forget about work. It's not impossible, though, to separate work from play & enjoy laying on that beach hammock without getting distracted by emails.

Make the most of your vacation time by planning ahead. CareerCast recommended reaching out to a specific trusted coworker or two & coordinating with them to ensure that you're covered in case something happens. A standard "out of office" email could mean that you come back to a loaded inbox, which will just stress you out. Make sure that clients know who to get in touch with while you're away.

As difficult as it may sound, bring along the fewest number of gadgets you can. So while a smartphone may be essential for staying connected, do you really need the tablet & laptop, too? It can be helpful to leave electronics in your room when you head to the beach. That way while you're basking in the sun & sipping on a margarita, you won't be tempted to cheat by checking your email.
